Dolly makes me happy. Spent the weekend listening to "Backwoods Barbie", released on her own label ("Dolly Records") and a "mainstream country" release which means "not bluegrass." It's the sort of banjo-meets-childrens-choir soaring country-pop of the kind Dolly has always done, and it's much fun. Most of the tracks are Dolly-written and she's is in strong form. There's full throttle Backwoods Oprah belting on "Better Get to Livin'", "Somebody's Everything", "Jesus and Gravity" and the title track (written for the forthcoming Broadway version of 9 to 5):
I've always been misunderstood
Because of how I look
Don't judge me by the cover
'Cause I'm a real good book
So read into it what you will
But see me as I am
The way I look is just
a country girl's idea of glam.
The other tracks are quality country staples: suffering wife ("Made of Stone"), suffering mistress ("Cologne"), defiant ex ("Shinola"), honky tonk piano shuffle that namechecks Hank Williams ("The Lonesomes"), weepy Celtic lament ("Only Dreamin'"), comfortingly maudlin Done Me Wrong ballad ("I Will Forever Hate Roses"*) and the mandatory square dance hoe-down cover of the Fine Young Cannibals ("She/He Drives Me Crazy", fast forward to the last minute.)
Dolly is Dolly, and I don't need anymore encouragement than that to totally buy what's she selling.

Those vocal affectations are all Whitney, not Dolly.
Classic fillum line I hope to one day use in person: " I know you're gonna do a real good job in the legislature."

Many women are convicted and sentenced on their appearance.
Sarah Ferguson duchess of pork, Lindy Chamberlain - pudding basin haircut and homemade frocks.
Nobody ever suggests that Madonna/Kylie/Olivia Newton-John might have learned by now to play a few instruments, as Dolly does; or write some classic songs ditto.
Another thing the 3 above might have done as Dolly has - founded a trust which supplies schoolbooks to all the poor kids in Kentucky.
Where's the Kylie Klinic For Outback Kids?
Bless your heart Miss Parton-with-it.
